preview for The Sandman - Official Trailer (Netflix)

One of Netflix’s biggest shows of 2022, The Sandman, boasts a large and impressive cast and teases a complex fantasy world based on the popular DC Comics series of the same name (created by Neil Gaiman).

But no matter how much time, money, and effort is thrown into a television show, the only way to ensure its survival is through viewership. If The Sandman manages to bring in enough of an audience, it could be Netflix’s new flagship fantasy, enticing Stranger Things or The Witcher fans with an impressive story that has never been successfully adapted into film or television.

The Sandman follows Morpheus, the King of Dreams, who is one day captured by a human who actually meant to capture Death, Morpheus’ sibling. After a century, when Morpheus (also known as Dream) is released from his imprisonment, he goes on a quest to repair his realm and regain his powers.

The original run of the comic went on for 75 issues from 1989 to 1996. And in addition to its overarching plots, the comic book series contained various short stories about the beings who controlled life, death, sleep, and everything in between. Already in Season 1, the Netflix adaptation covered the first two volumes of The Sandman story, but there’s plenty of characters and conflicts the show has yet to draw from.

So when can we expect to see Morpheus, Death, and the others again? Here’s everything we know about The Sandman Season 2 and when it could appear on Netflix.

Will The Sandman have a Season 2?

We finally have confirmation that yes, The Sandman Season 2 is happening. On November 3, Neil Gaiman and The Sandman official Twitter account announced there’s more of the comic book adaptation on the way.

Yes, it’s true: The Sandman will return to Netflix

Says @neilhimself: “There are some astonishing stories waiting for Morpheus and the rest of them…Now it’s time to get back to work. There’s a family meal ahead, after all. And Lucifer is waiting for Morpheus to return to Hell” pic.twitter.com/WKiWp7IDkk

When is The Sandman Season 2 coming out?

The Sandman is a big budget show for Netflix and features a large cast and a lot of special effects. Even if the story for the show is already written, filming could take some time. We may get more info on The Sandman Season 2 release date soon, but it’s possible we won’t actually see Dream and his siblings until late 2023 or even 2024.

The show also has to work around the ’80s elephant in the room, Stranger Things, which will likely have its final season also in 2024, so Netflix will have to make sure The Sandman isn’t overshadowed by its most popular series.

What will The Sandman Season 2 be about?

Since The Sandman Season 1 roughly covered the first two volumes of the comic book, it’s safe to assume the show will follow that same format, integrating the next two volumes of the comics into the series. We won’t spoil what could be coming next, but as a teaser, expect to learn more about the Endless (Dream and his siblings), to return to some of the minor characters we saw in Season 1 and to see a lot more from Lucifer.
