preview for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever | Official Trailer (Marvel)

It’s been a long, complicated year for Marvel. The studio kicked 2022 off with Moon Knight, a series introducing Oscar Isaac as a troubled superhero struggling with dissociative identity disorder. The year focused primarily on bringing new characters into the MCU, with Ms. Marvel, She-Hulk and America Chavez all getting their first ever on-screen debuts. Although these entries into the universe are exciting, and the television shows are well made (at least we think so), Marvel has only teased at what’s to come for the superheroes we’re already familiar with. While Spider-Man: No Way Home and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness did introduce the multiverse, and Thor is is still in play, we don’t have a clear idea of when or how all the current Marvel heroes, new and old, will join up in a new Avengers-level event. We know “The Multiverse Saga,” the next overarching storyline after the Infinity Saga with Thanos, is set to end in 2026, but much like it took 10 years before we even met Thanos, it’s clear we’re still in the beginning stages of the next multi-year epic Marvel plans to tell.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever continues that ongoing trend, focusing on the fictional country’s internal struggles more than teasing any major existential threat. Although, the film, unlike other pieces of the Marvel franchise, can be forgiven for its mostly contained storyline since it has to deal with the arduous task of grieving its lead actor, Chadwick Boseman. And in that respect, the film succeeds. It never shies away from what it means to mourn, and how the characters on-screen–much like the actors off-screen–had to grapple with how to move on.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is Marvel’s last movie of 2022, and it’s equal parts sobering and exciting for the new characters it introduces, and how it sets up known characters for the adventures to come. Here’s how you can watch Wakanda Forever right now.
